The new Volkswagen Atlas and Honda Pilot are both 3-row SUVs, with the Atlas seating up to seven and the Pilot offering space for eight. Despite having an extra seat, the Pilot is less spacious on the inside, offering 18.6 cubic feet of cargo space with all seats in place, compared to the Volkswagen Atlas's 20.6 cubic feet. In terms of total cargo volume, the Atlas stands out, offering 96.6 cubic feet compared to the Pilot's 87 cubic feet.
Safety Systems
The Volkswagen Atlas offers the following standard driver-assist systems:
- Forward Collision Warning
- Automatic Emergency Braking
- Blind Spot Warning
- Rear Cross-Traffic Alert
- Blind Spot Intervention
- Lane-Keeping System
The Honda Pilot offers several standard driver-assist systems, including Lane-Keeping Assist, Blind Spot Warning, Automatic Emergency Braking, and Adaptive Cruise Control, but lacks key systems such as Blind Spot Intervention, which automatically steers your vehicle into its lane if a vehicle is in your blind spot. For a 3-row family SUV, having this extra layer of security goes a long way. Safe Exit Warning and Automated Parking Assist are also available for the Atlas, adding even more confidence and family-friendly security. The Honda Pilot does not offer either of these features.
Tech Features
Both the Atlas and Pilot offer 12-inch infotainment touchscreens with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, digital instrument panels, and multi-speaker sound systems. Features unique to the Atlas include voice-activated controls, which reduce distractions while driving, along with the added convenience of USB ports in all three rows of the cabin.
Towing Capability
If you want to tow small trailers, campers, or boats during the summer, the Volkswagen Atlas is a far better option than the Honda Pilot. While the Honda Pilot offers modest towing capacity (up to 3,500 pounds), the Atlas can tow up to 5,000 pounds when properly equipped. The SE w/ Technology trim even comes with a built-in tow hitch to help you maximize hauling potential.
