See How the 2018 Volkswagen Tiguan Compares to its Long Island Area Competitor

Here at Riverhead Bay Volkswagen, we stand by the Volkswagen Tiguan SUV, and with good reason -- several reasons, actually. In fact, we believe that this well-appointed compact SUV offers our Long Island customers the best value in its segment. To prove that point, we decided to put it up against another popular compact SUV: the Ford Escape.

To keep things as fair as possible, we chose to compare the Tiguan 2.0T SE 4MOTION against the Escape SE 4WD model. While the Escape does come in at a lower Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price, that's, frankly, one of the few advantages it offers; however, when you consider how many standard features on the Tiguan are optional upgrades on the Escape, that edge disappears pretty quickly. From interior space to power, amenities to maneuvering, the Volkswagen Tiguan is by far the better vehicle. Read on to learn why.

2018 VW Tiguan Vs Ford Escape

Exterior Features

Both SUVs offer roughly the same exterior dimensions, but the Tiguan's tighter turning radius makes it the better choice when you're dealing with tight parking spots. The Tiguan offers standard daytime running lights, which are an added expense on the Escape. The Tiguan also offers integrated turn signal mirrors, which aren't even available for the Escape.

Interior Capacity

Both compact SUVs seat five comfortably, but the Tiguan has the advantage when it comes to overall passenger volume -- leading the way with 101.1 cubic feet versus the Escape's 98.7 cubic feet. If you tend to carry a lot of gear with you, the Tiguan's cargo space advantage is even greater. It offers 73.5 cubic feet of storage capacity when the second-row seats are folded, whereas the Ford can only manage 68 cubic feet.

Interior Amenities

When it comes to the interior amenities that appeal to today's drivers, the Tiguan is the out-and-out winner in this competition. You'll find such standard features as a leather-wrapped steering wheel, bucket seats, and a power driver's seat that's heated and offers lumbar support in the Tiguan; in the Escape, they're all available -- at an added cost. Beyond that, cruise control and intermittent wipers are optional features in the Escape that are standard issue Tiguan features.

The 2018 Volkswagen Tiguan features a 2.0-liter engine that manufactures 184 horsepower and 221 pound-feet of torque, easily out-muscling the Escape's 179 horsepower and 177 pound-feet of torque -- and that power comes in awfully handy when you're navigating these NY streets. Both SUVs are rated nearly equally for EPA-estimated mileage.

When you take a look at the manufacturers' warranties, there's absolutely no comparison. The Tiguan comes with a 6-year/72,000-mile basic limited new vehicle warranty that offers twice the protection as that offered by the Ford. In addition, the Tiguan provides longer corrosion and drivetrain coverage than the Escape provides. All together, you've got more peace-of-mind driving when you're behind the wheel of the Volkswagen Tiguan.
